So, we just received thousands of more refugees yesterday from East Africa. I don't get it. I seriously don't get it. We trail only behind FLORIDA and CALIFORNIA. There is no room for these people. I just don't get it. I don't get it! Not to mention this state is so far in debt...600,000 people are on medical assistance...that is the population of Milwaukee, WI.

There is a girl in my daughter's third grade class who cannot speak English. The teacher has to explain to her, in Spanish, the lessons AFTER she teaches the whole other class in English.

This is getting way out of hand.

I removed my original post, because I sounded too self-righteous.
All I have to say is: racism saddens me. Period.

The east African refugees are illegals? How can that be?
Yes, of course I realize white people immigrate to Minnesota.
I'm sure you realize that whites were also discriminated against when they first arrived - Irish, Italian, Polish...
If these people work legally and pay taxes, what is the problem? I do agree that those who are here illegally and mooch off the system should be penalized, but they need a break to get started out.
I'm sure you realize that many many people work more than one minimum wage job and still have a hard time feeding their families.
If Mexicans were not allowed to work in California, lettuce would be $5 per head. The agricultural industry would collapse.
Mexicans here in California work very very hard.
I have a friend who was a refugee from Cambodia - her father and Grandfather were killed by Pol Pot. When she came here, at age 6, she worked in the fields picking fruits and vegetables.
She is now a teacher, with a master's degree, teaching inner city children. She's one of the sweetest, most loving, honest, hardworking, strong people I have ever met. I'm glad we didn't seal our borders and keep her out.
There are many, many people like her. This country was founded on the blood, sweat and tears of immigrants, and they should be honored and respected.
I wouldn't be here if our borders were sealed. My grandfather was from Italy, and my other relatives were Irish. All hard working, tax paying people who love their country.

I agree with 99% of what you said.

And it's true...the East Africans are refugees. So are the Hmongs. So are the Liberians, Nigerians, Bosnians, etc.

If they work and pay taxes, that's fine. I never complained that they mooched off the system. I also don't have a doubt that most of them are hardworking.

My point was this - there isn't anymore room, and at least in my state (I cannot speak for California, although I know that illegals take up about 20% of your prison system) our schools are in turmoil with funding, and people are losing medical benefits and assistance because of the immigrants, illegal or legal.

Also, you cannot compare 2005 to way back in the past, when your grandfather immigrated here. These are different times, and back then our population wasn't 350 million.

And finally - in these times of terror, we need to seal our borders. Things are MUCH DIFFERENT nowadays.

    Hi Jessica!
I never read your reply because I was too chicken! I get carried away sometimes.
Anyway - my feelings about illegals are starting to change a bit...I work at a low income school and I see lots of cars w/ Mexican license plates - and that's not right. But at the same time - I don't think we have an overcrowding problem in our schools here - as you seem to have in MN.
But sealing the borders - I don't know - look at 9/11. They were here legally - and look what happened in London over the summer - home grown terrorism.
But you are right - we can't really compare our present problems w/ those at the turn of the century. There was alot more room then and life was much much simpler...
anyway...enough of this serious stuff...I hope Stuee proposes soon!
I'm listening to him play now! What a gorgeous song.
You're a star on the show today!
    Take care,
    Sue
